This is our reintroduction of the designs of William Spratling's contemporaries in Taxco, Mexico--designers such as Hector Aguilar and Valentin Vidaurretta. Our finely crafted reproductions of their sterling silver jewelry are sometimes enhanced with semi-precious stones, such as amethyst, Mexican malachite, turquoise, opals, garnet, red coral, variscite, and chrysocolla.

This collection is an outgrowth of our admiration for the great silversmiths and designers of jewelry and tableware in Taxco, Mexico. The town was first known for fine silver work in the latter part of the 19th century--orders for church pieces came from all over Mexico to be designed and produced in Taxco.

Living in Taxco in the early 1930's, American expatriate William Spratling took the town's heritage of fine silver craftsmanship and turned it to secular designs. He knew nothing of the silver arts, but introduced designs copied from the pre-Columbian art that he was collecting and selling. Because the local master silversmiths chose not to work with Spratling, he went to the nearby town of Iguala and brought back master silversmiths who would work in his shop in Taxco and train local youths in the metal arts. Spratling's business was so lucrative that many of the men who had worked in his shop struck out on their own with the hope of earning some share of the profit from the work they were doing.

Hector Aguilar, Antonio Pineda, and the Castillo brothers Antonio, Chato, Coco, and Miguel formed companies now renowned for their designs. Affluent and sophisticated, Valentin Vidauretta drew designs for Spratling, though he never worked in his shop. In turn, these designers trained other silversmiths and a culture of silver was born and thrived in this town that had made its name first as the largest silver mining town in the Spanish new world.

These are some of the reference books you may choose to read to better understand our regard for the Taxqueñan designers whose work we have reproduced. To date we have worked with the jewelry photography primarily in Silver Masters of Mexico. Working from a photograph of a jewelry design requires a sense of the weight, movement, and texture that a good design incorporates. In reproducing these jewelry designs, we have tried most especially to be faithful to the quality of work produced by Mexico’s master silversmiths.
